We are new street photographers but neither of us are new to photography. That’s especially true for myself (Peter) as I have been a photographer from the day my parents bought me my first camera a Kodak Brownie at least 60 years ago.
Then somewhere in the late 60s early 70s I started shooting professionally as a freelance black and white photographer.
My first paying gig was a shot for The North York Mirror of a couple of kids throwing leaves into the air. It was your typical fall shot and the editor of the newspaper offered me a photo credit as payment.
I refused and insisted on being paid. He said we don’t pay for photos but made the mistake of asking how much? I said $1. He was astonished at the price and asked why $1? I said because from then on I could call myself a professional photographer. The editor reached into his own wallet and produced a $1 Canadian bill and the rest is history.
As for Marion, she is a recent convert to serious photography. While she is still learning how to use the tools of our craft, she can “see” images. You can’t teach that. I think she sees better than I do as some of her images while on vacations and shooting around the Greater Toronto Area are astonishing. But, of course I am bias but in a good way.
So welcome to the blog and welcome to the adventure.
In the coming posts we’ll talk about photography. (I taught photography to thousands of students as an instructor for a national retailer a few years back.) We may talk about equipment and we will certainly talk about shooting digital images and shooting in black and white and why you might consider doing one or the other or even better both.
So buckle up and welcome aboard.
