Get On Your Knee

This is a snapshot of a cat in Italy. Only problem is everyone takes photos of cats at this angle and there’s no way to know that this is a cat in Italy. It’s a boring photo and i took it.

While at my age it is getting increasingly difficult to get down to eye level with the cat it would have made a huge difference.

First the energy of the image would have gone from static to maybe wow if i shot this image by placing the camera at eye level and composed the image in such a way as to include something Italian in the background. I mean it is Italy for goodness sake and you can’t walk 50 feet without walking into a fountain or statue or a good-looking set of ankles.

But we do this all the time and this is especially true with photos of the kids and pets. We all get lazy and shoot down at the kids or the family dog from standing height. How much more interesting to shoot a kid level and see what the child or the family pet sees?

A lot of wild life photography is shot at eye level with lots of environment background to give the image context.

Next time you think it’s time for a cat or dog photo or shots of the kids playing get down on the ground and shoot from that persepective and your images will immediately get much more dynamic and interesting.
