Amsterdam

Thanks to the potential of an Air Canada pilots strike we moved our vacation start date back five days giving us four days in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s great cities and one everybody should visit for three or four days. It’s a small city and clearly there are ten times more bicycles than cars (a constant hazard as the cyclists whip around without a lot of care for tourists who wander into a bike lane….something not always easy to spot).

And yes it has its Red Light district where prostitution is on public display every evening but it is also so much more.

Amsterdam is a people city first and a small one at that. The old city can easily be walked in a few hours but it is endless cafes and bars and shops on roadways broken up by canals and waterways. It is absolutely charming.

It’s also a university town bringing with it all the youthful energy and hijinks of young people studying from around the world.
