Okay so now you’ve bought your camera and you’ve read the manual and maybe you’ve even take a lesson or two. Now what?
Now you go out and take the shot!
What’s the shot? It’s the shot that means something to you. It can be a shot of the kids or the cat or flowers in a pot. It can be your vacation photos or a pictures of the family. It can be photos of birds or the majestic Grand Tetons or grungy street photography. It doesn’t matter.
You see the shot is what you make of it. Yes some shots are snapshots and some shots are fine art but they’re all just shots.
What brings meaning to the shot is what meaning it has for you.
No one – absolutely no one – can judge or even criticize your shot. Anyone who does is merely making an unsolicited comment about something that is happening in their head and their comment has nothing to do with your shot.
It’s what Julia Cameron the author of The Artist’s Way (highly recommended for creative types and non-creative types who want to get creative) artistic child abuse.
Your shot is unique. It’s singular. There are no rules that must be followed (although rules can be helpful) and no one way in which you should do your art.
Be brave. Post your very best work. Share it with the world. And in doing so become the very best photographer you can become.
