What does street photography actually mean? Is it fine art? Is it storytelling? Or is it something entirely different?
Reuben Radding, a New York City street photographer and teacher, talks about his work in another fabulous Paulie B Walkie Talkie YouTube video Street Photography and Vulnerability.
“Are we just walking around on a dying planet trying to find amusement” says Radding.
As he walks down 5th Avenue under The Empire State Building Radding muses about street photography as a practice where you go out everyday as opposed to when you feel like it which for him suggests it’s more of a hobby.
He talks about shooting film where after the shot there’s the thought that maybe, just maybe, you’ve shot a masterpiece where with digital you discover right away that you’re failing.
With one of the coldest winters in decades ending, Spring is just around the corner and for many of us we will spend more time shooting on the street.
But what meaning, if any, will you bring to your street photography? Or will your street photography just be a repeat of what you’ve already shot year after year?
Walk with Reuben Radding and Paulie B as they muse about things like identity and discovery and a search for meaning in their street photography.
