Shoot now, ask questions later

Who is this kid?

Daniel Gutierrez is an L.A. street/landscape photographer who is someone you should know if you’re questioning your own photography skills.

Daniel is the subject of another wonderful Paulie B “Walkie Talkie” video interview of new young photographers currently shooting amazing images.

Daniel’s use of a basic digital camera to create beautifully layered and nuanced images is inspirational. His understanding of composure and exposure is outstanding and worth studying.

And, why digital? He went digital when repairs to his Leica film camera got too expensive for him to afford to repair it. So he started shooting digital and he found the ability of the digital camera to show black and white images in the viewfinder was a better experience for him compared to the Leica with its see-through viewfinder.

As I’ve said before the make and model or even the format of the camera doesn’t matter. Yes lens choice is important but a lot of street photographers never shooting with anything else than a 28 or 35mm lens. The difference between film and digital when it comes to prints or posting can be impossible to discern.

What matters is the photographer and what should matter to the photographer is whether or not they are capturing the images they see in their mind’s eye. Everything else is just marketing.
