Are You Over Editing?

You’re Probably Editing You Photos Wrong According To Ansel Adams” is Tatiana Hooper’s newest YouTube video and if you’re editing your own negatives or raw files you might just want to listen to what Tatania and Ansel have to say about your editing.

So why are you editing your images?

Is there something you think you missed when shooting and needs fixing in post?

If so, you’re not alone in this thinking but according to Ansel Adams (if Ansel Adams is a new name to you consider Googling it) you’re going about your photography all wrong.

Editing is about helping the photograph become what we imagine it could be when we saw the scene before us.

It’s not about fixing a bad photo.

It’s about something much more fundamental. According to Tatiana when it came time for Adams to take a photography and before he pushed the shutter he visualized what the photo would look like when printed.

From there every “editing” decision from framing, composing, cropping and exposure were all part of the process to create an image that match his vision.

And, yes Adams edited his images in the darkroom and often went back and reprinted old images but all of this work was in the interest of producing a print that more accurately matched his orginial vision of the image he had before he even picked up the camera.

Watch the video. It may change the way you approach your photography and might even give you pause the next time you fire up your raw editing software.
